Chapter 1 – Four Weeks After My Worst Mistake

I damaged my marriage only three months after our wedding. There was no secret romance or grand excuse behind it—just one selfish decision I regretted almost immediately. Instead of telling my husband, I hid what I had done and tried to act as though our life had not changed.

Four weeks later, I sat on the bathroom floor holding a positive pregnancy test. My husband and I had dreamed about children, but I could not celebrate because I did not know whether the baby was his.

He was overjoyed. He talked about tiny shoes, family trips, and Sunday mornings filled with pancakes and cartoons. At night, he rested his hand on my growing stomach. When the baby kicked hard, he laughed and said our child must already love soccer.

I laughed with him, then waited until he fell asleep before staring into the darkness. I rehearsed the truth countless times: I betrayed you. I may be carrying another man’s child. But every morning arrived before my courage did.

I claimed I was protecting him. Deep down, I knew I was protecting myself.

Each ultrasound made his love more visible and my conscience heavier. As my due date approached, I studied every image for unfamiliar features, as if a grainy picture could answer the question I was too frightened to face.
