His answer quieted something inside me. I did not argue. Around my daughter’s incubator, strangers were working with more devotion than her father was willing to offer. I stopped expecting Ethan to rescue either of us.

Then she was gone.

I returned home alone, moving through a world that seemed indecently normal. When I opened the front door, however, I wondered if grief had confused me.

Ethan’s charcoal walls were now soft cream. The heavy furniture had been replaced by lighter pieces, and warm wood stood where he had insisted on glossy black kitchen finishes. Flowers rested beside the sink. The rooms felt gentler, but they no longer looked like our house.

“Laura, I am so sorry,” she said.

I sank onto the unfamiliar couch. “What happened to the house?”

Diane paused before answering. “We didn’t do that as a present. We did it to keep you safe.”

She explained that the property had remained inside a family trust. Ethan had enjoyed limited financial control, but he had never possessed the unrestricted ownership he claimed. After Diane and her husband learned that he had refused to leave the resort, they called their attorney.

While I sat beside the incubator, they had begun removing Ethan’s claim and securing the home for me.
