I Gave Her My Childhood Home—Then My Key Stopped Working

I remained standing. My friend admitted that one night she had awakened convinced someone was trying the back door. It might have been a branch, a raccoon, or nothing at all, but grief had made every sound feel threatening. She called my mother because I had an important work meeting the next morning and she did not want to frighten me.

My mother came over, checked the doors, and stayed until sunrise. The next day, she suggested replacing the aging lock. She assumed the locksmith would give me a key, while my friend assumed my mother would tell me. Neither followed through.

“That explains the lock,” I said. “It doesn’t explain the silence.”

My friend lowered her eyes. She said she was grateful for everything I had done, but gratitude had become another burden. Whenever I asked whether she was improving, she felt pressure to say yes. My mother never asked her to improve. She simply sat with her through breakfast.

“Some mornings I needed a mother,” she said. “I love you, but I couldn’t ask you to become mine.”

My mother explained that my friend had first called to ask how anyone survived the beginning of another day after losing a parent. Mom understood that question because she had once asked it after my grandmother died.

The truth stung, but it also softened me. Their bond was not a replacement for me. Still, good intentions did not excuse changing my property or keeping me uninformed. Love could make room, I realized, but it also needed honest boundaries.
