I Gave Her My Childhood Home—Then My Key Stopped Working

Chapter 1 – The Key That Failed

When my best friend lost her mother in August 2025, I mistook action for wisdom. I watched grief hollow out her days in uneven waves. Her apartment was noisy, crowded, and tangled with reminders, so I offered her the empty house where I had grown up. My parents had downsized, but the creaking floors, faded curtains, old-book scent, and trace of lemon cleaner remained. I thought the place could shelter her from other people’s expectations.

The first thing I noticed was the lock. It was newer, brighter, and completely unfamiliar. My key stopped halfway in. I knocked, called her name, and listened to the silence behind the door. Every terrible possibility arrived at once. I knocked harder, telling myself I was being responsible, but fear had already taken control.
