Chapter 1 – The Question That Broke the Quiet
Five weeks after our daughter Isla was born, Rowan stood beside her bassinet and asked whether she was really his. I thought exhaustion had made me misunderstand him. Isla had pale blonde hair and clear blue eyes, while Rowan and I both had darker coloring. To me, she was simply our beautiful, surprising baby. To him, her appearance had become evidence of something I had never done.
I told him there had been no one else. Rowan kept pacing, saying he needed certainty before he could bond with her. Then he asked for a DNA test. When I refused to treat my faithfulness like a debate, he packed a bag and went to his parents’ house. His mother, Barbara, called that evening and warned me that Rowan might divorce me if the results were not what he expected.
I agreed to the test for Isla’s protection, not because either of them deserved proof. For the next several days, I fed and rocked our daughter alone while Rowan sent brief messages asking whether the laboratory had called. He never asked how I was healing. He never asked whether Isla had slept.
The report arrived in a plain envelope. It confirmed that Rowan was Isla’s biological father. Our pediatrician also explained that blonde hair and blue eyes could emerge from recessive family traits, even when neither parent showed them. I stared at those words until they blurred. Rowan had his answer, but I was left with a harder question: Could a marriage survive after trust had been replaced by a laboratory result?
