My breaking point arrived on a Thursday night. Abby came home at eleven wearing a red dress and carrying the smell of perfume and restaurant food. Rosie had cried for hours. My arms hurt, my eyes burned, and Mom was sleeping under heavy medication.

Abby casually said she and Preston had gotten drinks.

“You promised to be back five hours ago.”

“I lost track of time. It happens.”

I told her I had failed an important nursing assignment. School was not a hobby; it was the future I was trying to build. Abby snapped that she had problems too and had never chosen to raise a baby alone.

“But you aren’t doing it alone,” I said. “You keep handing it to me.”

She walked away without answering. In that moment, my anger settled into something colder and clearer: I could not keep disappearing to make her life easier.

The next morning, Abby asked me to watch Rosie while she met Preston at a coffee shop near the lake. I agreed, then called my friend Ellie. Her parents, Sandra and Mark, were retired social workers who now taught and consulted. They listened without interrupting as I described the missed work, sleepless nights, and ignored messages.

We agreed on a wake-up call—not an impersonation of authorities, but a blunt conversation Abby could not brush aside.

I packed Rosie’s bag and warmed a bottle. Mom left for acupuncture with her friend Samira. After Abby departed, Sandra and Mark took seats at the kitchen table beside Rosie’s bassinet.

Then Preston canceled, and Abby came home early.
