I slipped outside and crouched behind the overgrown rosebush beneath the kitchen window. It felt dramatic and a little foolish, but if Abby saw me, she would direct every question my way instead of answering for herself.

She entered expecting crying or clutter. Instead, she found Sandra and Mark drinking tea beside the sleeping baby.

“Who are you, and why are you with Rosie?”

Sandra introduced herself as a social work consultant and explained that I had asked for guidance because the household’s caregiving arrangement had become unsafe and unsustainable.

Abby’s face drained of color. “Where’s Lena?”

“Resting,” Sandra said. “Something she has barely done in weeks.”

Abby insisted she had never forced me to help. Sandra calmly listed what Abby had normalized: leaving Rosie without firm return times, ignoring my calls, interfering with my job and education, and assuming a nineteen-year-old student would absorb the responsibilities of parenthood.

“I thought she liked being an aunt,” Abby whispered.

“She does,” Mark replied. “Being an aunt is not the same as being an unpaid, full-time parent.”

Sandra made it clear that they were not government officials and no report had been filed. But she also refused to soften the stakes. If a baby was repeatedly left without a reliable plan, an actual investigation might be far less gentle.

“Rosie needs a mother who arranges proper care,” Sandra said. “If you cannot do that, other people may have to decide where she is safest.”

Abby stared at the bassinet as if she had finally heard the weight of her own choices.
