The $8,000 Accident That Never Happened

Chapter 1 – The Debt

Mike walked into the kitchen while I was making soup and said one mistake might cost him his job. His face looked drained, and his hands would not stay still. He claimed he had borrowed his boss Jim’s car, wrecked it, and been ordered to pay $8,000 immediately.

“If I don’t make this right, he’ll fire me,” Mike said. “I hate asking, Laura, but could you lend me the money?”

Three months earlier, my grandmother had left me $15,000. Mike was the only person who knew the exact amount. After seven years of marriage, I believed helping him was no different from helping us. That evening, I transferred $8,000 into his checking account. Mike hugged me and promised to repay every cent. I remember feeling grateful that Grandma had given me the ability to protect our household one last time.

For several days, life appeared ordinary. Then my computer battery died while I was searching for a lasagna recipe, so I opened Mike’s laptop. On the desktop was a file named “Tickets_Miami.pdf.” We had never discussed Miami.

I clicked it, expecting a work document. Instead, I found flights and an eight-day hotel reservation for two people. The total was $7,983. One passenger was Michael. The other was Sarah—our married neighbor.
