The hotel refunded most of its charge, but the airline kept fees and issued credits in Mike’s name. He transferred the cash refund to me and sold his motorcycle to cover the remaining balance. Within three weeks, all $8,000 was back in my account.

Repayment did not repair the marriage. Mike asked to meet in a counselor’s office, and I agreed to one conversation. He looked exhausted when he admitted that Sarah’s attention had made him feel adventurous and important.
