Mark was chopping vegetables when I entered. I placed the letter on the counter and told him I had seen the recording. His knife stopped in midair. He denied everything once, then twice, but his voice weakened when I mentioned the preserved footage and Mrs. Parker’s willingness to give a statement.

“Please don’t call anyone,” he said. “I can explain.”

I stepped away from him and called the police anyway. I did not shout or insult him. I simply reported the extortion letter, the withdrawal, and the person shown collecting the money. While we waited, Mark sat at the kitchen table with his face in his hands. He confessed that there had been no affair. He had accumulated gambling debts and panicked when the people demanding repayment began calling him at work. He believed I would notice a direct withdrawal, so he invented a scandal frightening enough to make me withdraw the money myself.

His desperation explained his motive, but it did not excuse his choice. He had used my love for him, my concern for Alison, and my reputation as a teacher as tools. When the officers arrived, I provided the letter and arranged for the footage to be collected properly. Mark returned what remained of the cash and agreed to cooperate.

He begged me to protect him from consequences because we were married. I told him marriage could call me to mercy, but not to concealment. Mercy did not mean surrendering my safety or pretending trust still existed. That night, I stayed with my sister and asked Mark to communicate only through my attorney.
