After 35 Years, I Was Fired Over a Locked Lunch Fridge

Chapter 1 – The Locked Lunch

At 60, I was fired from the factory where I had spent 35 years. My manager said I was selfish, paranoid, and no longer a team player. My offense was bringing a locked mini refrigerator to work because someone kept stealing the lunches my sick wife, Matilda, prepared with trembling hands.

Until then, my days had rarely changed. I clocked in at 7:30 each morning, breathing in cotton dust and machine oil. I had trained Danny and many others, helped send our daughters through school, and kept working while Matilda’s medical bills grew. She still wrapped my sandwich in wax paper every morning, insisting that love did not retire simply because her body was failing her.

Then my lunch disappeared three times in one week. Lisa from accounting offered sympathy. Jennifer and Mark responded to my work-chat complaint with shocked messages, but nobody admitted anything. By Friday, even the potatoes and meat rolls Matilda had struggled to prepare were gone. I was furious, not because I had missed another meal, but because someone treated her effort as worthless.

That weekend, my friend Pete sold me a used mini fridge for fifty dollars. On Monday, I rolled it beneath my workstation and secured it with a small lock. Karen from the front office called it strange. Others whispered that it was selfish. I ignored them, thinking the matter was finally settled. Two weeks later, Mr. Thompson’s assistant appeared beside my machine and told me the boss wanted to see me.
