Before Harper began playing at Secret Solstice, Dave told the audience how her performance had been arranged. Harper had said that she wanted to learn the drums, and she accepted his offer to teach her. Dave then proposed a much larger step: playing publicly for thousands of festivalgoers in Iceland. Harper agreed to that as well.
Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighters’ drummer, surrendered his seat at the kit and assisted Harper as she got into position. She then started “We Will Rock You,” with the remaining musicians playing and singing beside her. Since Harper was covering the percussion part, Hawkins joined the performance as a vocalist rather than a drummer.
Harper appeared assured during the number and completed it successfully, looking pleased to be performing with Dave and his band. Her father watched as she played the instrument that had been central to his own work before Foo Fighters. His visible response conveyed the pride and happiness he felt while seeing his daughter follow the same path.
Another family performance followed in 2018. Harper and Violet both appeared with Dave at Notes and Words, a fundraising concert for San Francisco’s UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Harper played drums again, and Violet provided vocals. With both daughters already joining their father in performance, the possibility of a Grohl family band remained a question for the future.
