Timeless Magic: Chris Isaak’s Spellbinding Live Rehearsal Performance of Wicked Game!

CenterStaging filmed Chris Isaak in a dim studio during a 2006 rehearsal of “Wicked Game.” His live singing remained notably close to the vocal heard on the 1989 recording. Viewed more than 189 million times, the footage also revisits the song’s immediately identifiable opening riff in an unusually intimate performance setting.

Backing Isaak is Silvertone, with the rhythm section divided between drummer Kenney Dale Johnson and bassist Rowland Salley. Hershel Yatovitz takes responsibility for the lead-guitar part. A humorous visual contrast comes from Isaak wearing flip-flops while singing demanding, deeply expressive falsetto passages. Musical restraint and precise sound engineering, rather than an elaborate presentation, define the session.

Yatovitz produces the familiar lead tone with a Fender, combining spring reverb and pronounced delay. Subtle control of the tremolo arm helps supply the part’s surf-rock influence. Instead of crowding the arrangement, the musicians allow individual notes to remain exposed, preserving the spacious and haunting quality of the song.

One commenter described “Wicked Game” through the principle that less can achieve more, pointing to its unhurried rhythm, subdued voice, and striking melody. That observation also fits the stripped-down character of the rehearsal. Its appeal comes from retaining the song’s essential elements without adding unnecessary musical excess.
