“Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)” opened the 1967 sequence. “My Girl” appeared fourth in the medley. The performance offered an example of the group during the decade in which it placed numerous hits, while the later appearance on The View showed that its songs could still generate a multimillion-view online audience.
The history of “My Girl” reaches back to its release on December 21, 1964. Smokey Robinson and Ronald White of the Detroit vocal group The Miracles wrote and produced the song. Robinson had been enlisted to create a recording for The Temptations, although he originally planned for his own group to record “My Girl.”
As Robinson worked with The Temptations, the group persuaded him to give them the song instead. Its release brought The Temptations their first number-one single in the United States. It subsequently became the group’s signature song and remained part of both the 1967 Ed Sullivan medley and the 2024 performance on The View.
Robinson’s idea for the lyrics came from his feelings for his wife, Claudette Rogers Robinson. She was also performing as a member of The Miracles at the time, giving the song a personal and romantic origin.
