Kris Kristofferson singing “Me and Bobby McGee” with his friends and fans Martina McBride, Lady A and Jewel is too heartwarming, and you can feel the love for the country legend every time Jewel looks at him

One viewer called it among Kristofferson’s most beautiful unplugged appearances and included a message of remembrance. Another celebrated the younger performers for enjoying the chance to sing and play songs from what the commenter regarded as country music’s greatest era. That viewer also thanked Kristofferson for the many hours of joyful entertainment he had provided.

Another prominent Kristofferson performance paired him with Johnny Cash for “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.” Before they sang, Cash—identified as the Man in Black—spoke about how deeply he loved the song Kristofferson had written for him. Kristofferson responded that the occasion could be the proudest moment of his life. Their introductory exchange showed the respect between them before they joined their voices in harmony.

“Me and Bobby McGee” began with an idea proposed by Fred Foster. Kristofferson developed the song from Foster’s suggestion, and the two men received joint songwriting credit. Roger Miller, described as a Californian singer, was the first performer to make a recording of the composition.

The version most widely recognized was recorded by Janis Joplin. Her rendition was issued as a single only after her death, and it went on to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.
