That time Paul McCartney needed a police escort to make it in time to rock New York’s Shea Stadium with Billy Joel, and the vibes from Billy seeing Paul come through for him were too heartwarming

Paul McCartney faced a tight deadline on his way to join Billy Joel at Shea Stadium in New York. Having arrived from across the Atlantic, McCartney relied on an NYPD escort to get through the city quickly enough for the appearance. The assistance worked: with almost no time left, the Beatles musician reached the venue, rushed onto the stage and took his place alongside Joel for a performance of “Let It Be.” His arrival allowed the planned collaboration to proceed despite the difficult timing.

The moment McCartney emerged was especially notable for Joel’s response. His expression showed how happy he was that his guest had managed to arrive before it was too late. Although Joel was himself presented as one of the most accomplished songwriters, he spent substantial portions of the duet watching McCartney with the enthusiasm of a Beatles admirer. That reaction remained visible as the newly arrived performer settled into the song and began leading their rendition.

For this performance, Joel surrendered his customary position at the keyboard. The musician known as the Piano Man moved aside so McCartney could play the piano and deliver his version of the Beatles number. Joel continued to participate vocally, adding harmonies rather than leaving the performance entirely. The arrangement therefore placed McCartney at the instrument and in the principal role while still retaining Joel as his duet partner through those supporting vocal parts.

People viewing footage of the appearance later drew attention to Joel’s behavior. One commenter identified three details: Joel mimed playing the piano, provided backing vocals and spent much of the number watching McCartney. The response treated those actions as evidence that the occasion was special. Rather than reproducing the comment verbatim, its central observation was that Joel remained involved in the song even as he yielded the keyboard and much of the spotlight to his guest.

A second viewer focused more heavily on McCartney’s urgent journey and entrance. According to that account, New York effectively provided him with a grand reception by moving him from the airport to the performance as rapidly as possible. The commenter said McCartney reached the stage and transformed the mood of the venue, leaving those present smiling. The same response noted that members of the band were grinning and described Joel as shining with pride as the appearance unfolded.
