Did this woman do the right thing by calling Child Services?

A woman recently took to Reddit seeking advice on whether she had made the right decision by calling Child Services after her neighbor left her six children on her doorstep.

As it turns out, this wasn’t the first time her neighbor had tricked her into babysitting. The woman, who we’ll call OP, explained that she had tried to avoid answering the door but eventually gave in when her neighbor continued to knock persistently.

The neighbor quickly dropped off the children, ranging in age from 6 months to 7 years, and informed OP that she would be back on Sunday. OP, feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, tried contacting the neighbor through text and phone calls to express her concern about the situation. However, the neighbor claimed she was already out of town and couldn’t return in such a short span of time.

OP then faced a difficult decision. The neighbor suggested dropping off the children at another neighbor’s house, who happened to be elderly and frail. Concerned about the children’s well-being, OP warned the neighbor that if she didn’t return within ten minutes, she would involve Child Services. Instead of realizing the gravity of the situation, the neighbor responded with anger and foul language.

Feeling like she had no other choice, OP made the decision to call Child Services. Authorities arrived promptly and collected the children. The police, who often accompany Child Services in cases involving abandoned children, asked numerous questions about the mother’s actions.

Despite believing she had done the right thing, OP’s husband, who had experienced foster care as a child, disagreed. He accused her of separating the mother from her children and claimed she didn’t give the neighbor enough time to retrieve them before contacting the authorities. He even went as far as blaming OP for any potential negative consequences the children might face in foster care.

Overwhelmed by her husband’s response, OP questioned whether she should go back to Child Services and explain that she may have overreacted or misunderstood the situation. She expressed concern for the children’s well-being and her desire to make things right.

It’s clear that OP faced a difficult dilemma, and there are valid arguments on both sides. However, with the safety and welfare of the children in mind, it’s understandable why she felt compelled to reach out to Child Services.

Ensuring the children were placed in a secure environment was her top priority. Now, it’s important for OP to have an open and honest conversation with her husband to address their differing perspectives and work towards finding a resolution together.

Let’s continue the dialogue: What are your thoughts on this situation?
