LA fires double tragedy after amputee dad tried to wait for ambulance for disabled son: Latest victims named

The Los Angeles wildfires tragically claimed the lives of Anthony Mitchell, a 67-year-old amputee, and his son Justin, who had cerebral palsy. Wheelchair user Anthony remained behind to keep his son safe. “No matter what,” his daughter Hajime White said, “he was not going to abandon his son.” They were unable to escape the flames, and their bodies were discovered in Altadena.

At least ten people have died as a result of the fires, but authorities warn that the number could increase as identification is completed. According to the LA medical examiner, the condition of the remains is the reason for using DNA and dental records. Sheriff Robert Luna highlighted the difficulties faced by emergency personnel, pointing to persistent gas leaks and spot fires.

Victor Shaw, 66, was one of the victims; he lost his life attempting to save his family’s 55-year-old home. Shari, his sister, remembered begging him to leave. “I had to save myself when I went back in and called his name and he didn’t respond.” Likewise, 82-year-old Rodney Nickerson died after deciding to remain in his Altadena house, thinking the fire would go away.

The wildfires are now the most destructive in LA history, having destroyed over 34,000 acres. Paris Hilton and Anthony Hopkins were among the famous people who lost their homes. Authorities ask for patience as the search goes on, and the sheriff cautions that “the true devastation will take time to uncover.”
