Dannion Brinkley reveals what he saw when dead for 28 minutes

There are very few people who can speak about death with the kind of firsthand detail Dannion Brinkley offers.

In 1975, Brinkley—a former U.S. Marine, businessman, and athlete—was struck by lightning while on the phone, and what followed would forever alter the course of his life. The bolt traveled through the phone line, into his head, and down his spine. It was a moment that seemed certain to end everything.

“It went into the side of my head above my ear, it went down my spine,” Brinkley recalled during an interview with 8 News Now. “It welded the nails of the heels of my shoes to the floor. It threw me up in the air, I see the ceiling, it slams me back down, a ball of fire comes through the room and blinds me. I am burning. I am on fire. I am paralyzed.”

His injuries were extensive—so much so that he was pronounced dead. His body was even taken to the morgue. For 28 minutes, he was officially gone.

But then, he came back.

What Brinkley remembers from those 28 minutes is what has drawn worldwide attention. According to him, death didn’t feel like darkness or absence. Quite the opposite.

He says he left his body, floating along with the ambulance as it rushed him to the hospital. He claims to have seen his lifeless body from above and then transitioned into what he described as a tunnel leading to a radiant, light-filled space. There, in what he called the “Crystal City,” he encountered a spiritual being made of pure light.

In an interview with the YouTube channel T&H – Afterlife, Brinkley described watching a full panoramic replay of his life. “You watch it from a second person point of view,” he said. “In the life you just reviewed, what difference did you and God make?”

It’s the kind of experience that’s been told in various forms by others who’ve come close to death, yet Brinkley’s story is particularly unique—not just for its vividness, but because it happened again. Twice.

In 1989, while undergoing open-heart surgery, Brinkley says he had another near-death experience. He recalls reuniting with what he referred to as “angelic instructors,” who encouraged him to use his renewed spiritual awareness to help others—especially those nearing the end of life. Then again, during brain surgery, he said he experienced a third brush with the beyond.

Each event only reinforced his belief that death is not the end. “When you learn you don’t die, when you learn you’re a spiritual being, you’re not going to go to hell, that’s enough to inspire you to change,” he told 8 News Now.

Naturally, stories like Brinkley’s draw skepticism. Scientists and medical professionals have long debated the neurological and psychological explanations behind near-death experiences—ranging from oxygen deprivation to the brain’s final bursts of activity. Yet Brinkley remains firm in his truth.

He’s since written and spoken extensively about his experiences, hoping to offer comfort to those who fear death or wonder what lies beyond. Whether you believe every detail or not, there’s no denying the power of his story—and the message it carries about life, love, and the human spirit.

So what do you believe happens after we die? Is it nothingness—or is it something more? The conversation continues.
