Although it may seem unrealistic, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon maintains that a “Trump 2028” presidency is a real possibility.
According to Bannon, Donald Trump and his team are considering “many different alternatives” to run for president again, possibly for a third time, even though the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution expressly prohibits anyone from holding the office for more than two terms.
During his appearance on the Apocalypse Now? podcast, Bannon boldly asserted that on January 20, 2029, Trump would not only run for office again but also “be in the White House signing executive orders.”
“We have many different alternatives to make sure President Trump… is the President of the United States,” he reiterated in a different interview with NewsNation. And we’ll gradually roll those out.
His remarks follow the release of unofficial “Trump 2028” memorabilia with slogans like “Rewrite the Rules,” which may allude to repealing or evading the 22nd Amendment, which was enacted in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt served four terms as president.
However, legal experts emphasize that a third term is still forbidden by the constitution. Three potential workarounds were presented to LADbible by law professor Danny Karon: Trump could be appointed vice president and rise through the ranks, run as vice president under an ally like JD Vance, or try to change the Constitution itself. However, there are significant political and legal challenges in each case.
Trump himself hasn’t ruled out the possibility. He acknowledged “loopholes that have been discussed” in a 2024 TIME interview, but he also stated, “I don’t believe in using loopholes.”
Additionally, he stated in a previous NBC interview that he was “not joking” about a potential third term, saying, “A lot of people want me to do it.”
Trump is still concentrating on the 2024 election for the time being, but if Bannon is to be believed, the discussion about 2028 is already under way.
