As the Catholic Church transitions into a new era under Pope Leo XIV, many faithful around the world still hold affection for another prominent candidate — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.

A Pope in Spirit — But Not in Title

Known affectionately as “Chito,” Cardinal Tagle has long been admired for his pastoral approach and progressive values. He was repeatedly described by commenters as “humble,” “happy,” and “in touch with the people,” making him a spiritual favorite for many watching the Church’s future unfold.

“Cardinal Tagle, who is as humble and simple as Pope Francis, who is in touch with his flock,” one person commented. Another simply said, “Number 2!!! Love what he stands for.”

Tagle’s Rising Influence

At 67, Cardinal Tagle is still relatively young by Vatican standards. He currently heads the Dicastery for Evangelisation — a key position overseeing the Church’s global missionary efforts. His years as Archbishop of Manila and Bishop of Imus in the Philippines gave him hands-on experience in the third-largest Catholic country in the world.

Cardinal Tagle’s broad appeal stems from both his pastoral presence and academic pedigree. Though American-born, Pope Leo XIV holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru, where he served for decades. He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023 and led the Dicastery for Bishops before his election.

Theologically, Leo XIV is viewed as a centrist. He shares Francis’ emphasis on outreach and social justice, especially for migrants and the poor, but he maintains a conservative stance on doctrinal issues like the ordination of women.
