Halle Berry Responds to Critics of Video of Her in Bed with Boyfriend Van Hunt

Halle Berry Shuts Down Mother’s Day Backlash: “It’s My Day, and I’ll Celebrate It My Way”

A playful Mother’s Day post took an unexpected turn when fans and critics weighed in on what some called an “inappropriate” moment. But Halle Berry isn’t here for the judgment—and she made that crystal clear in a bold national television appearance.

“First of all, it’s not ‘Kids’ Day.’ It’s called ‘Mother’s Day,’” Berry emphasized during her June 4 appearance on *Today with Jenna & Friends.* “And if I want to be in bed and spin with my man, that’s what I’m going to do.”

On May 11, while in Cannes, France, the Oscar-winning actress shared a short, cheeky Instagram clip featuring herself and longtime partner Van Hunt cozied up under the covers. The video, set in their hotel room, casually showcased Berry holding a bottle of her Respin “Let’s Spin Intimacy Gel”—a product specifically designed for menopausal women navigating changes in their bodies and relationships.

With a mischievous grin, Berry teased viewers: “Y’all saw how the day started. This is how it’s ending.” Hunt, smiling, responded with a laugh: “Yeah. I wish you’d hurry up, too.”.

Though lighthearted and completely non-explicit, the post stirred controversy. Some followers felt it was too suggestive for the occasion and inappropriate for a platform like Instagram. Others questioned whether Mother’s Day was the right moment to highlight sexual intimacy.

But Berry didn’t shy away from the criticism. Speaking to Jenna Bush Hager, she said she was surprised—especially that the strongest reactions came from other women.

“Women got in their feelings,” Berry said. “They were like, ‘Should she be doing that on Mother’s Day? Shouldn’t she be with her kids?’ Well, I was with my kids earlier. But guess what? The day has 24 hours.”

The actress argued that celebrating motherhood shouldn’t exclude romance, pleasure, or open conversations about intimacy—especially as women age. She emphasized that the backlash said more about societal discomfort with female sexuality than it did about her actual content.

“There was no nudity. We were under sheets. We sleep in beds, people,” she quipped. “This is a part of life. And yes, I’m going to talk about sex. Because it’s healthy. It’s vital to longevity.”

Berry also took aim at the idea that intimacy can’t coexist with family life.

“We have families because we have sex,” she laughed. “Why is this such a taboo? It’s not shameful. It’s natural.”

And while the social media uproar dominated headlines, Berry used the moment to steer the conversation toward a bigger message—celebrating autonomy, joy, and love in all its forms. She encouraged women to reclaim ownership of their narratives, especially around aging, motherhood, and pleasure.

Later that day, Berry and Hunt appeared together in an online segment for Today, where the topic shifted from controversy to commitment. Hunt revealed that he had proposed—but the proposal is “still on hold.” Berry, laughing, explained that after three previous marriages, neither of them feels rushed to prove their love with a ring.

“We already have what matters. He’s my best friend. That’s the kind of relationship I always dreamed about,” Berry shared. “And if we do get married someday, it won’t be because we have to. It’ll be because we want to.”

The couple—who made their relationship public in 2020—has become known for their playful, unfiltered displays of affection. But beyond the headlines and cheeky Instagram posts, Berry’s message was one of freedom and empowerment.

“Motherhood doesn’t erase womanhood,” she said. “And love, pleasure, and laughter belong to us, too.”

As the conversation around intimacy, age, and autonomy continues, Berry’s stance offers a refreshing reminder: being a mom doesn’t mean silencing other parts of yourself. And if it means celebrating Mother’s Day in bed with your partner and a bottle of gel—then so be it.
