19 people lost their lives in a terrible multiple-vehicle collision on Wednesday, November 20, near Huehuetoca in the State of Mexico, along the Mexico-Querétaro Highway.
A large trailer heading toward Mexico City failed to brake in time, crashing through a roadside bank and colliding with five cars and a pickup truck at kilometer 059+000. Authorities had to partially close the north-south section of the highway after the trailer jackknifed and blocked all three lanes due to the devastating impact.
According to preliminary reports, the loss of control might have been exacerbated by rainy conditions. Investigators believe that low visibility and decreased tire traction contributed to the collision because the roads were slick from previous downpours. To determine the precise cause, authorities are still investigating.
When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they found several casualties and a horrifying pile-up. Even though the death toll was high, a number of people only suffered minor injuries. In order to rule out internal injuries or delayed trauma symptoms, paramedics treated survivors on the scene and suggested that some seek additional evaluation at nearby hospitals.
Rescue crews spent hours clearing debris and tending to the injured while traffic in the crowded corridor came to a complete halt. The incident has brought up serious issues regarding highway safety procedures once more, particularly in areas with heavy traffic and in bad weather. All drivers have been advised by officials to use caution, especially when driving fast on wet pavement.
Numerous families are in mourning as a result of this tragic event, which has also prompted new calls for tougher enforcement of heavy vehicle safety regulations. The country is dealing with the high toll of yet another avoidable highway accident while investigations continue.
