Mudslide in Lillooet, B.C., Leaves Four Dead, One Missing

A devastating mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia, has claimed four lives, with a fifth person still unaccounted for, according to the RCMP.

B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe extended condolences to those grieving:

“I also extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who are now mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of their loved one, and to the family of the missing person we have yet to locate.”

The Loss and the Search

The tragedy began with last weekend’s heavy rainfall, which triggered flooding and landslides in the region. The first confirmed victim was a woman found earlier at the site. In recent days, three more men have been confirmed dead.

Search efforts for a fourth missing person were challenged by severe weather and unstable terrain. Officials have now concluded the active search but continue to consider next steps.

Law enforcement and search-and-rescue crews are working to identify the deceased and notify their families.

Community Impact

Highway 99, a critical route through the area, remains closed with no estimate for reopening. The closure underscores the scale of the damage and the difficulty of recovery in such rugged terrain.

For the families, friends, and community, the grief is immeasurable. Lives were lost suddenly, without warning, in a place where many simply sought to travel or live in peace.

A Time for Reflection

Mudslides remind us of the raw power of nature and the vulnerability of human life in its path. While infrastructure and safety measures matter, moments like this reveal the deeper need for compassion, preparedness, and solidarity.

As B.C. mourns these lives, communities across the province and country are reminded of the importance of supporting those left behind and of finding resilience together in the face of loss.
