It has long been said that the presidency comes with relentless scrutiny, but even by those standards, Donald Trump continues to generate an unusually constant stream of headlines. From policy disputes to personal optics, nearly every development connected to the White House under Trump’s leadership sparks debate.
Over the past week, much of that attention has centered on the president’s renewed focus on Greenland. Trump, alongside senior members of his administration, has repeatedly argued that U.S. ownership or control of Greenland is strategically essential for national security. These comments have drawn strong reactions internationally, particularly given concerns that such a move could strain relations within NATO.
Officials in Denmark, which has governed Greenland since the 19th century, as well as leaders within Greenland itself, have reiterated that the territory is not for sale. European governments have echoed that stance, framing Trump’s remarks as provocative and diplomatically unrealistic. While Trump has often weathered criticism to push controversial ideas, the intensity of the backlash surrounding Greenland has been notable even by his own standards.
Amid this political storm, attention has also turned toward someone who has been largely absent from public view: Melania Trump.
Ahead of resuming the role of First Lady, Melania Trump made it clear that she did not intend to redefine or aggressively expand the influence traditionally associated with the position. Still, her reported absence during a period of heightened political controversy has prompted discussion. According to reports, Melania has not been publicly seen alongside the president for approximately 20 days, a gap that some commentators believe is intentional.
The last confirmed public appearance of Donald and Melania Trump together was during New Year’s celebrations at Mar-a-Lago. The Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet was among the first outlets to highlight her absence, noting that while Melania posted a message on X on January 20 thanking supporters during her first year back as First Lady, she has otherwise remained out of sight.

Commentator Sigrid Rege Gårdsvoll, writing for Vårt Land and AmerikanskPolitikk.no, addressed the issue directly, stating:
“She is conspicuous by her absence. It is fundamentally difficult to form an opinion about Melania Trump and her as the first lady of the United States, because she is simply not visible.”
The observation has fueled speculation, though not all experts see her absence as unusual. Eirik Løkke, an advisor at the think tank Civita and a specialist on U.S. politics, told Dagbladet that Melania Trump’s low profile aligns with a long-standing pattern rather than signaling internal turmoil.
“She does not want to take on a public role, but prefers to stay in the background,”
Løkke said, adding that this approach was evident throughout the 2024 election campaign when compared with other presidential spouses.
He further suggested that Melania’s absence is best understood as a deliberate and calculated choice rather than a reaction to recent controversies.
“Everything pales in comparison to Donald Trump and how he is as president. I don’t think he is interested in anyone else getting attention. And now there has been even more attention than before.”
Historically, Melania Trump has maintained a reserved public presence, often choosing limited engagement over constant visibility. During Trump’s first term, she selectively appeared at official events while largely avoiding day-to-day political discourse. Observers note that her current approach appears consistent with that pattern.
Whether her absence will continue as Trump navigates international criticism over Greenland and other policy initiatives remains to be seen. For now, the contrast between Trump’s outspoken, headline-dominating style and Melania’s near-total withdrawal from public view has become another point of interest in an administration already defined by sharp contrasts.
What Melania Trump’s low profile ultimately signifies—personal preference, political strategy, or simply continuity—remains open to interpretation.
