Jimmy Kimmel makes brutal dig at Melania Trump at the Oscars

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel once again found a way to mix politics with Hollywood spectacle, this time turning his attention toward Melania Trump during the 2026 Academy Awards.

The annual ceremony unfolded at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where comedian Conan O’Brien hosted the 98th Oscars. The night celebrated several major winners, including One Battle After Another, which reportedly walked away with six Academy Awards, and Sinners, which secured four.

While the awards themselves drew plenty of attention, one of the evening’s most talked-about moments came when Kimmel stepped on stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Known for his long-running political commentary, the talk-show host used the opportunity to deliver a pointed joke aimed at the Trump family.

Kimmel’s history of public criticism toward Donald Trump is well documented, so it was hardly surprising that Melania also became part of the punchline—especially given the recent release of her documentary.

As he introduced the category, Kimmel joked about documentaries in general before slipping in the remark that caught the audience’s attention.

“There are also documentaries where you walk around the White House trying on shoes,” he said.

He followed with another line that made the political reference unmistakable.

“Oh man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”

The comment referenced Melania, a documentary released earlier this year that chronicles Melania Trump’s return to the White House after her husband’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. The project offers a behind-the-scenes look at her preparations for resuming the role of First Lady in 2025.

According to the official synopsis, the film includes exclusive footage of meetings, private conversations, and moments inside spaces rarely shown to the public, presenting Melania’s perspective as she steps back into one of the world’s most scrutinized political roles.

Reports indicated that Amazon paid approximately $40 million for exclusive access to produce the documentary, making it one of the most high-profile political media projects of the year.

Melania herself addressed the mixed reception shortly after the film’s release, expressing pride in the project regardless of critics’ opinions.

“I’m very proud of the film so people may like it, may don’t like it, and that’s their choice,” she told CNN. “We achieved what we want to achieve. For myself, it’s already successful. I’m very proud of what we did.”

Critics, however, were far less enthusiastic. Several prominent outlets delivered harsh reviews.
The Hollywood Reporter described the film as “expensive propaganda,” while The Atlantic labeled it “a disgrace.” Meanwhile, The Guardian dismissed the project as “gilded trash.”

Online reactions have also been divided, with the documentary reportedly holding a low user score on IMDb.

Kimmel’s remarks at the Oscars were just the latest example of his long-running public clashes with the Trump political sphere. Over the years, his monologues and award-show appearances have frequently included jokes aimed at Donald Trump and other figures associated with him.

During the same Oscars segment, Kimmel also appeared to take aim at broader issues surrounding media and free speech. While discussing the courage required to tell difficult stories, he delivered another tongue-in-cheek line that drew laughs from the audience.

“Telling a story that could get you killed for telling it is real courage,” he said. “As you know, there are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea & CBS.”

The quip referenced previous tensions between Kimmel and political figures, including controversies that briefly took his show off the air before it later returned.

As is often the case with major award shows, the moment quickly circulated online, sparking debate among viewers. Some praised Kimmel’s sharp humor, while others criticized the joke as unnecessarily political for an entertainment event.

Either way, the brief exchange ensured that Melania Trump’s documentary—and Kimmel’s long-running feud with the Trump orbit—remained part of the conversation during one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.
