Chapter 1 – The Messages on His Phone
When I was seven months pregnant, I found messages on my husband’s phone that left no room for an innocent explanation. My hands shook as I read them in our bathroom, one palm pressed protectively against my stomach. We had painted a nursery, argued lovingly over baby names, and felt our son kick beneath our joined hands. Yet while I was planning our family’s future, my husband had been sharing a secret life with another woman.
I drove to my parents’ house and collapsed in my childhood bedroom. When my father came in, I expected the man who had comforted me through childhood thunderstorms to say I deserved better. Instead, after I announced that I wanted a divorce, he quietly asked me to remain married for the baby’s sake.
Then he confessed that he had cheated on my mother while she was pregnant. He called it a meaningless weakness and insisted a husband could fail without ceasing to love his family. I stared at him, barely recognizing the father whose marriage had always seemed steady and honorable.
His confession wounded me almost as deeply as my husband’s betrayal. Still, my doctor had repeatedly warned me to limit stress, and every cramp frightened me. That night, when my son kicked beneath my ribs, I decided to postpone the battle. I returned home, not because I had forgiven my husband, but because I wanted to carry my baby safely through the remaining weeks. I shut my husband out emotionally and focused on appointments, meals, and the nursery. Everything else could wait.
