Ron Howard calls wife ‘good luck charm,’ shares secret to 49-year marriage

Ron Howard has been a prominent figure in Hollywood for nearly as long as he’s been alive. Starting his career as a toddler, the 70-year-old has built a legacy in both film and television, maintaining a nonstop presence in the industry. Beyond his professional success, Howard has also demonstrated stability in his personal life, having been married to his wife, Cheryl, for almost 50 years.

Born on March 1, 1954, in Duncan, Oklahoma, Howard made his first film appearance at just 18 months old in Frontier Woman. By the age of two, he had already made his stage debut in The Seven Year Itch. Howard’s breakthrough came when he was cast as Opie in The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968), which launched his celebrity journey. Despite his young age, Howard received immense support from his parents, both of whom were involved in the entertainment industry. He recalls a conversation with them: “You can do it if you want, but you don’t have to. But if you start, you can’t quit.” Howard understood the commitment and, as he reflects, enjoyed acting and was good at it.

While still starring in The Andy Griffith Show, Howard appeared in the 1962 hit musical film The Music Man. His natural talent continued to shine, and in 1973, he starred in American Graffiti alongside Harrison Ford and Richard Dreyfuss. The following year, Howard was cast as Richie Cunningham in the iconic TV series Happy Days (1974-1984), which cemented his status as a household name. The show also spawned popular spin-offs, including Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy.

Long before his Happy Days fame, Howard met his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Alley, in 1970. The couple married in 1975, and their bond has remained strong for decades. Howard describes Cheryl as “unbelievably supportive” and credits her for their enduring compatibility through all their shared experiences. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of their first date, Howard shared a touching post on Instagram, reminiscing about their first outing to see It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, followed by pizza.

Cheryl has appeared in several of Howard’s projects, including a cameo in Arrested Development, which he produced and narrated. Howard refers to her as his “good luck charm,” ensuring she makes at least a brief appearance in each of his films. Beyond her role as a supportive partner, Cheryl is a published author and holds degrees in psychology and screenwriting.

Together, Ron and Cheryl have four children: Bryce, twins Paige and Jocelyn, and son Reed. Their daughter Bryce Dallas Howard has made a name for herself in films such as Jurassic World and The Help, while Paige has appeared in movies like Adventureland and The Employer. Reed is a professional golfer, and Jocelyn remains private.

As the couple nears their 49th anniversary, Howard reveals that the key to their long-lasting marriage is communication. “People say, ‘How’d you do it?’ There’s no technique other than communication. You have to learn to have difficult conversations in constructive ways.” He also acknowledges that an element of luck plays a role in growing together as a couple.

From his iconic roles in television to his Oscar-winning work as a director, Ron Howard’s contributions to the entertainment industry are vast. His personal life reflects the same stability and commitment, making him a true Hollywood legend.
