Why Marlo Thomas Refused to Become ‘Mom’ of Phil Donahue’s 5 Kids – What Do They Look Like?

Marlo Thomas, once known for her skepticism toward marriage, surprised many when she not only embraced it but also became a stepmother to Phil Donahue’s five children. Over their 44-year marriage, Marlo forged deep and lasting bonds with her stepchildren, an experience that has become a central part of her life. Their enduring relationship took a poignant turn when Phil Donahue, the celebrated talk show host, passed away on August 18, 2024, at 88 years old.

Marlo, a well-known actress and advocate, initially had strong opinions about marriage, likening it to a form of imprisonment. She famously quipped that marriage was like “living with a jailer you have to please.” In her 2020 book, What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life, co-written with Phil, she admitted that she once felt marriage wasn’t for her. Despite her misgivings, meeting Phil changed her perspective.

Phil was already a father of five when they married in 1980. Marlo, who had never had children, stepped into the unexpected role of stepmother. From the start, she decided not to take on the traditional mother role. She shared in a 2011 interview, “I decided I was not going to try to be a ‘mother’ to Phil’s children in the traditional sense… instead, to be their friend.” Marlo took inspiration from her own mother, who had been a close friend to her children. This approach led to strong, lasting relationships with Phil’s children, a bond she takes pride in to this day.

Phil Donahue, known as the “King of Daytime Talk,” was married to Margaret Cooney before Marlo, and together they had five children: Michael, Kevin, Daniel, Mary Rose, and James. Each of Phil’s children has gone on to lead their own unique lives. Michael, his eldest, built a career in television and maintains a close relationship with Marlo. His children, Connor and Kenzie, also share a special bond with Marlo, who refers to them as her grandchildren, despite not being biologically related.

Kevin, Phil’s second son, is an avid marathon runner, and his athletic accomplishments are a point of pride for the family. Marlo frequently celebrates his achievements, as well as the close-knit relationship they’ve built over the years. Daniel, Phil’s third son, often joins the family for special occasions, and their shared moments reflect the warmth of the Donahue clan. Marlo’s bond with Mary Rose, Phil’s only daughter, is also strong. Mary Rose, who pursued a passion for cooking, has maintained a close connection with her father and stepmother, often appearing in family gatherings documented by Marlo.

Tragically, Jim, Phil’s youngest son, passed away in 2014 due to an aortic aneurysm. Jim, who had built a life in Honolulu as a lawyer, was remembered fondly by his family for his independent spirit and humor. His ashes were scattered in the waters of Honolulu, a place he deeply loved.

Marlo’s journey from a marriage skeptic to a devoted wife and stepmother highlights the transformative power of love and family. As she navigates the grief of losing Phil, she finds comfort in the deep bonds she formed with his children. These relationships, built over decades, remain a source of strength for her during this difficult time, demonstrating the enduring impact of their blended family.
