Jimmy Carter’s grandson gives update on ailing former president: ‘He’s pretty sick’

Former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Hugo Wentzel, recently shared an update on his grandparents’ health following his elimination from the reality show Claim to Fame. His remarks offer insight into the difficulties the family is facing during this time.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hugo Wentzel reflected on his grandfather’s current condition. While Carter continues to remain mentally active, Wentzel noted that his health is steadily declining due to age and illness. Wentzel explained, “He always wants to be doing something with his mind, so he’s trying to keep himself busy, but he is really sick and getting older.”

President Carter had been frequently hospitalized before transitioning to home hospice care in February, marking a turning point in his health.

Following Wentzel’s elimination from the show, he paid tribute to his 100-year-old grandfather, praising him as an “amazing grandpa.” He shared his admiration, referring to President Carter as “Papa,” and emphasized the positive influence Carter has had on his family and the country. Wentzel highlighted his grandfather’s unwavering commitment to equality, saying, “He believes in equality for everyone, regardless of race, class, gender, anything. He’s just an amazing person. I aspire to be like him one day.”

Wentzel also shared that it has become increasingly difficult to visit his grandfather at their home in Plains, Georgia, where President Carter is receiving hospice care. He explained that his mother, Amy Carter, is deeply involved in her father’s care and spends much of her time with him.

Despite his health challenges, President Carter remains intellectually engaged by listening to audiobooks. Wentzel underscored his grandfather’s sharp intellect, describing him as a “genius” and expressing deep admiration for his enduring mental acuity.

As the Wentzel family continues to face these challenges, they are supported by the prayers and well-wishes of many. Their strength as a family, united in love and care, shines through during this difficult period.

Together with the Wentzel family, many continue to pray for comfort, strength, and healing for President Jimmy Carter.
