‘American Idol’ Fans Debate Whether Carrie Underwood Is a ‘Good Choice’ as New Judge

Carrie Underwood is making her return to the show that launched her career, “American Idol,” but this time as a judge. While some viewers are excited to see her take on this new role, not everyone is thrilled about the change.

The decision to bring Underwood on board comes after the exit of Katy Perry, and fans have been vocal about their thoughts. Some expressed concerns over the lack of diversity in the musical genres represented by the judging panel, which now includes two country music stars: Underwood and Luke Bryan. A viewer commented on social media, noting that with Underwood joining Bryan and Lionel Richie, there was no representation for the pop genre, which Perry had covered during her time on the show.

Another fan expressed a similar sentiment, saying, “I wish they had replaced Katy with another pop singer. There’s too much country now.” These concerns were echoed by others who questioned how the balance between genres would affect the contestants’ experience and feedback.

However, despite the criticisms, many fans are excited to see Underwood return to the “American Idol” stage. Supporters pointed out her talent and experience, saying she is a great choice to mentor contestants alongside Richie and Bryan. Some even noted that having a former winner as a judge brings a unique perspective to the panel. As one fan put it, “Katy was great, but Carrie knows real talent, and that’s what we need right now.”

Underwood’s journey with “American Idol” began in 2004 when she auditioned as a contestant, ultimately winning the competition in 2005. Now, 20 years later, she’s returning as a judge, a role that she admits feels like coming home. In an interview, she expressed her excitement, saying that many of the same people are still part of the show’s team and that it feels like a full-circle moment in her career.

She also acknowledged that her experience as both a contestant and a successful artist would help her offer valuable insights to the aspiring stars. “I feel like being on both sides of the coin, I’ll be able to hopefully offer some insight and help,” she shared, adding that she plans to be honest but constructive in her feedback.

Though she’s excited, Underwood admitted that one of the toughest aspects of her new role would be turning down contestants, especially when they ask for a second chance. She explained that even after letting them try again, it’s hard to say no when the result doesn’t change.

As Underwood prepares to join Richie and Bryan for the upcoming season in 2025, viewers are eager to see how her presence will influence the show.

Whether critics or supporters, all eyes will be on how her expertise and experience shape the next generation of “American Idol” hopefuls.
