Former child star killed in LA wildfire after mom tries to put out the fire

Former child star Rory Callum Sykes tragically lost his life in the devastating Los Angeles fires. Known for his appearance on the beloved 1990s TV program Kiddy Kapers, Rory passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning at the cottage he lived in, located on the estate of his family’s Malibu property. He was just 32 years old at the time of his death.

Rory was born with cerebral palsy and faced numerous challenges throughout his life, yet his spirit and resilience shone brightly. His grieving mother, Shelley, shared the heartbreaking details of his final moments. When the fire broke out, she desperately tried to extinguish the flames engulfing his cottage, but a lack of water thwarted her efforts. Shelley recalled her desperate attempts to contact emergency services but was unable to get through.

“He died needlessly,” she told Australian outlet 10 News First. In his final moments, Rory urged her to leave, saying, “Mom, leave me.” But Shelley, like any mother, couldn’t bear to abandon her son. Tragically, she was unable to lift or move him due to his condition. In a frantic effort to save him, Shelley ran for help, but by the time she returned with firefighters, the cottage had been reduced to ashes.

Rory, born in Australia, had only recently moved to the United States. His life had been one of immense struggle and triumph. He underwent numerous surgeries to improve his mobility and regain his sight, but despite enduring so much, he dreamed of exploring the world. Shelley described him as a “wonderful son” in an emotional post, calling him a “gift” who shared her birthday, July 29, along with his grandmother’s.

In her tribute, Shelley shared her anguish, stating, “I couldn’t put out the cinders on his roof with a hose because the water was switched off. Even the 50 brave firefighters had no water all day.” She also expressed her devastation over the preventable nature of his death.

Rory’s remarkable story extended far beyond his early fame on television. At just eight years old, he became a sought-after motivational speaker, inspiring countless individuals with his determination and positivity. More recently, he and Shelley had co-founded Happy Charity, further reflecting his desire to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Shelley’s tribute concluded with a poignant statement: “He will be incredibly missed.”

Rory’s death is one of at least 11 fatalities linked to the ongoing wildfires, a grim reminder of the human toll of these natural disasters. His resilience, kindness, and determination left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him or heard his story. Rory’s life, though tragically cut short, continues to inspire and touch hearts worldwide.
