My Son-in-Law and His Wife Tricked Me and My Husband into Babysitting – So We Gave Them a Taste of Their Own Medicine

When my husband, Mark, and I arrived at our son-in-law Tyler’s barbecue, we expected a fun evening filled with food, laughter, and quality family time. What we didn’t expect was to be blindsided—tricked into babysitting a house full of kids while Tyler and his wife, Brittany, slipped away for a night out.

They thought they had pulled one over on us.

They were so wrong.

An Unexpected Welcome

The invitation had seemed innocent enough.

“Just bring yourselves!” Brittany had said over the phone, her voice cheerful and inviting. “We’ve got everything covered.”

So, Mark and I showed up, a bottle of wine in hand, ready to enjoy a family gathering.

But the moment we stepped inside, something felt…off.

For starters, the house was a mess. Used paper plates and empty beer bottles were scattered around the living room. The barbecue looked like it had already happened—without us.

From the kitchen, we heard laughter and chatter. As we followed the sounds, we found Tyler and Brittany surrounded by six of their friends, drinks in hand, coats already on.

Something wasn’t right.

“Jen! Dad! You made it,” Tyler said with a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

I exchanged a glance with Mark. Are we late?

“You did say four p.m., right?” I asked. “It looks like the party is winding down.”

Brittany’s smile faltered for just a second before she glanced at Tyler. “Oh, we decided to move things along.”

“Yeah,” Tyler chimed in. “We’re all heading out to check out that new place downtown. But don’t worry! You guys can stay and watch the kids. Oh—and our friends’ kids, too.”

Wait. What?

Before I could process what was happening, one of their friends beamed at us. “Thanks so much! Sitters are so expensive these days.”

I blinked.

Did they seriously just ambush us into babysitting seven children?

Mark’s jaw tightened. He said nothing, but the tension in his shoulders spoke volumes.

I took a deep breath, forcing a smile.

“Of course! Have fun.”

They Had No Idea What Was Coming

Relief flooded Brittany’s face. She grabbed her purse in a hurry. “Great! The kids are in the basement watching a movie. There’s pizza in the fridge if they get hungry again.”

“How many kids exactly?” I asked, still reeling.

Tyler barely looked back. “Just seven. We’ll be back by midnight. Maybe.

With that, the front door slammed behind them.

Mark turned to me, his face flushed with anger. “Did they just—?”

I nodded, still wrapping my head around it. “Yep. They just assigned us a surprise babysitting job.”

“They didn’t even ask.”

“They assumed.

Mark let out a slow, controlled breath. “We shouldn’t just let this slide.”

“Oh, we won’t,” I assured him. “We’re going to teach them a lesson they won’t forget.”

A slow smile spread across Mark’s face. “What do you have in mind?”

I leaned in and whispered my plan.

By the time I was finished, Mark was chuckling. “Jenny, you’re evil.”

I grinned. “I know.”

First, We Took Care of the Kids

The kids weren’t at fault, so we made sure they had a great evening.

We played games, served them a healthy dinner, helped them brush their teeth, and read bedtime stories. By 9:30, all seven were tucked into their sleeping bags and beds, out like lights.

Now, it was time for our fun.

Mark and I cleaned the house from top to bottom—washing dishes, tidying up, and putting everything back in order. Not because we felt obligated to, but because I wanted the place to be spotless for what came next.

At 10:30 p.m., I picked up my phone and dialed Brittany.

She answered on the third ring, music and laughter echoing in the background.

“Hello?”

I gasped dramatically. “Brittany! It’s a disaster! You need to come home now!

Then I hung up.

Let Them Sweat a Little

My phone immediately lit up with a return call.

I let it ring.

Then another. And another.

Mark raised an eyebrow. “We’re really going all in, huh?”

“Oh, absolutely.”

Texts flooded in.

Brittany: What happened?!

Tyler: Is everyone okay?!

I ignored them all.

Twenty minutes later, cars screeched into the driveway. The front door flew open, and in rushed Tyler, Brittany, and their friends, faces pale with panic.

“What happened?!” Brittany gasped.

“The kids? Where are they?” Tyler demanded.

Mark and I sat calmly on the couch, flipping through magazines.

I looked up. “Oh, that?” I said nonchalantly. “Everyone’s fine. The kids are asleep upstairs.”

Tyler’s mouth fell open. “But you said it was a disaster!

I placed my magazine on the coffee table and smiled.

“Oh, it was. Your manners were the disaster.”

Brittany’s jaw dropped. “You tricked us!”

I shrugged. “Just wanted to make sure you hurried back—just like you hurried out without asking if we were okay watching seven kids for the night.”

Mark clapped Tyler on the shoulder. “You’re welcome, by the way.”

Then we grabbed our things and walked out, leaving them stunned in their spotless house.

Lesson Not Quite Learned

As we drove home, Mark chuckled. “That felt good, but I don’t think they really got the message.”

“Oh, we’re not done yet.”

The following weekend, we invited them over for family dinner.

They arrived right on time, carrying a bottle of wine.

Something smelled amazing.

“Wow, what’s cooking?” Tyler asked.

“Oh, I hope you’re hungry,” I said sweetly, leading them to the dining room.

Instead of a home-cooked meal, a stack of takeout containers sat in the center of the table.

Brittany frowned. “Chinese food?”

Mark grinned. “We thought we’d change things up.

Before they could dig in, I clapped my hands together.

“Oh, by the way! We have to step out for a bit. Hope you don’t mind watching the house for us!”

Mark grabbed his coat. “Yeah, just make yourselves comfortable. Oh, and keep an eye on the neighbor’s dog—he’s a bit wild, but I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

“Wait, what? You’re leaving?” Brittany sputtered.

“Don’t worry!” I called out. “We’ll be back… eventually.

Just as we reached the door, our neighbor’s enthusiastic puppy came barreling into the room, knocking over a lamp.

Tyler’s face drained of color. “You can’t be serious.”

Mark grinned. “Oh, but we are. Have fun!”

Then we left for a nice, leisurely dinner.

Lesson Finally Learned

By the time we returned, Tyler and Brittany were exhausted. The puppy had made a mess, the evening had been chaos, and they looked like they’d aged ten years.

I smiled. “How was your night?”

Tyler rubbed his temples. “Wow, that was… something.”

Mark chuckled. “A little overwhelming when responsibilities are just dropped on you, huh?”

Brittany sighed. “Okay, okay. We get it. We should have asked before leaving the kids with you.”

Mark clapped Tyler’s back. “Lesson learned?”

Tyler sighed. “Lesson learned.”

“Good,” I said, setting down a homemade pecan pie. “Now, who wants dessert?”

As they left that night, Brittany hugged me.

“I’m sorry we took advantage of you,” she whispered. “We won’t do it again.”

I hugged her back. “I know you won’t.”

Mission. Accomplished.
