OUR LAST TRIP TOGETHER—AND NONE OF US KNEW WHY DAD KEPT LOOKING AT HIS WATCH

It felt like the ideal weekend. Just the five of us crammed into a pedal boat, floating across the lake like we used to when we were kids, without any screens or worries.

In the front, the twins were having a good time splashing each other. I was stretched out in the back, half watching Dad pedal with that quiet smile of his, half listening to their laughter. But there was a problem.

He continued to look at his watch.

Not once. Not twice. Always. as though he was racing something that we couldn’t see.

“Calm down, Dad,” I finally teasingly said. “There is nowhere else for you to be.”

He grinned without responding.

I couldn’t get rid of the strange feeling later when we paddled back to the shore and the sun started to set. That day, it was all about him, not just the incessant watch-checking. Despite being physically present with us, he was quieter than normal and more aloof. He seemed to be there but somehow… not there.

I made an effort to ignore it. After all, it had been a long time since we were all together. These family vacations had become less frequent than I wanted to acknowledge due to work, school, and life. I didn’t want to overthink things and ruin the atmosphere. However, I couldn’t help but stare at Dad as he got up to stretch and looked down at his watch again, his brow slightly furrowed.

After the boat ride, we returned to the cabin, where the evening proceeded as usual, with us laughing over dinner, playing card games, and reminiscing about our childhood. Occasionally, though, my eyes would stray to Dad.

I didn’t realize how much he seemed to withdraw into himself until we were sitting around the firepit roasting marshmallows. I saw him look at his watch once more, but his expression was more serious and intent.

“What’s going on, Dad?” Before I could stop myself, I blurted out the question.

He stopped, letting out a slow breath. “Nothing, just the way things are. Just checking that I don’t lose track of time.

It felt strange the way he said it. He was never this evasive. My brother and I looked at each other. There was undoubtedly a problem, but Dad wouldn’t say what.

I heard him moving about in the kitchen later that night while I lay in my room. He always made himself a cup of tea before bed, so the sound was gentle and familiar. Tonight, though, it felt different—almost rushed. As if he was anticipating something.

When I awoke the following morning, the kitchen was deserted. My mother had already gotten up and was packing the remaining breakfast items. The final piece of bacon was the source of the twins’ argument. But there was no sign of Dad.

I assumed he was getting some fresh air or going for a walk. Then I noticed something strange: on the kitchen counter was his watch, which he had been checking all the time.

It was like a ton of bricks to me. The previous evening, I had witnessed him remove it and carefully set it on the counter a short distance away from me. That evening, he hadn’t worn it.

I experienced a surge of uneasiness. Grabbing the watch, I began looking through the back for a clue as to why he was acting the way he was. At that moment, I became aware of something I had not previously noticed: a tiny engraving on the watch’s back.

“To my dearest Jane, Always waiting for you,” it said.

I was struck by the name like a lightning strike. Jane? Jane was who? I had no memory of ever hearing of a Jane. In an attempt to understand it, I flipped the watch over in my hands once more.

My mother entered at that very moment. Her face turned pale as she gazed at the watch in my hands.

Her voice was shaking as she said, “You should sit down.”

With my heart pounding, I carefully put the watch down. This moment felt so wrong for some reason. I waited for my mother to explain while seated at the kitchen table.

She started, her voice trembling, “I should have told you sooner.” However, I was unable to. Not in this manner. Your father wasn’t always who you believed him to be.

My chest constricted. “What do you mean?”

She inhaled deeply before continuing, tears welling up in her eyes. “He had another life before he met me and before you were born. Jane was the name of his wife. They intended to tie the knot. However, something occurred that completely altered the situation.

She stopped and used the back of her hand to wipe her eyes. Jane was involved in an automobile accident. Despite your father’s best efforts, she failed to survive. He told her that he would wait for her, but he was devastated. However, after everything… He never really moved on, I suppose. Over the years, he has kept that promise close to his heart. even in our company. even your birth. I believe he was constantly anticipating her return.

In stunned silence, I sat there. In front of me, everything I believed to be true about my dad and our family was coming apart. None of us had ever known that he had been carrying this pain and secret for so long. As my mother talked, I began to comprehend the extent of his sorrow, even though I couldn’t comprehend how he had managed to keep something so important from us.

“What kept you from telling us?” My question was hardly audible above a whisper.

“Because I thought he would move on,” she said. I believed it to be a passing phase. However, it wasn’t. Furthermore, I had no idea how to fix it.

The hours that followed were a blur. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to make sense of everything my mother had told me. The man who always made me laugh and who I thought had it all together, my dad, had been living under the shadow of a promise he made to a stranger. And I had no idea at all.

Upon Dad’s eventual return, I was unsure of how to approach him. I was hurt, betrayed, and perplexed, but I also felt sorry for him. He had been trapped in a never-ending cycle of waiting for someone who would never return, living in the past.

I made the decision to have a conversation with him that afternoon. I had to hear it from him as well, but I was at a loss for words. I discovered him sitting by himself on the porch, staring at the horizon.

I sat down next to him and whispered, “Dad.”

His shoulders were tense, as though he knew what was about to happen, but he didn’t initially look at me.

“I understand,” I replied. “Relating to Jane.”

When he finally turned to look at me, I saw a sadness in his eyes that I had never seen before. He nodded slowly at first without saying anything.

“I apologize,” he said quietly. “I never intended to cause you harm. I simply couldn’t figure out how to let go.

For a long time, we sat in silence, both of us searching for the right words.

At last, I said, “I wish you had told us.” “You didn’t have to bear this burden by yourself. You didn’t need to act fake.

“I understand,” he muttered. “I believed I could go on. However, I was unable to. And now, I apologize if I have caused you pain or made you feel inadequate.

I understood, but it was difficult. I recognized my dad’s imperfections. The burden of his grief had been his, not mine. Even though I still had a lot of questions and felt sad for the father I believed I had, I came to a significant realization.

Invisible scars can occasionally be carried by people. They occasionally cling to the past in ways that have an impact on the present. But the most crucial thing is that we let them heal, even if it takes a while.

So we took a step forward. Together, though not flawlessly. My father began to reveal more about his past, which he had long kept hidden. Although it wasn’t always simple, it helped us get closer. Without the specter of past commitments, we began creating new memories.

People aren’t always who we believe them to be, and life isn’t always what we expect. But ultimately, even in the most surprising ways, our shared love is what heals us.
