Mary Lou Retton, who was once hailed as America’s Olympic heroine, is once again in the public eye, but under problematic circumstances. In her hometown of Fairmont, West Virginia, the 1984 gymnastics gold medalist was arrested on May 17 for DUI.

Officers reportedly responded to reports of a Porsche swerving. In an AutoZone parking lot, they discovered Retton, 57, exhibiting symptoms of impairment, such as slurred speech and an alcoholic odor. She refused a blood test, and a bottle of wine was discovered next to her. Retton was released on a $1,500 recognizance bond after being charged with one misdemeanor DUI count.

The arrest comes after a near-fatal medical emergency in October 2023. Retton was admitted to the intensive care unit after contracting a rare form of pneumonia. After her daughter disclosed that she lacked insurance, a viral Spotfund campaign was launched, raising over $459,000. Later, Retton defended the fundraiser, claiming that all of the money was used for medical expenses and that the rest was donated to the American Lung Association.

After winning five medals at the 1984 Olympics, including the first all-around gold for an American woman, Retton rose to national hero status. Because of her success, she became well-known and left a lasting legacy.

That legacy is complex today. Her recent difficulties have raised concerns about the difficulties faced by top athletes when their notoriety wanes. Today, Retton’s journey serves as a reminder that even celebrities are susceptible to life’s setbacks, exhibiting both glory and vulnerability.
