This week, a series of odd pictures of President Donald Trump caused a lot of conjecture on the internet when perceptive social media users suggested that a peculiar bulge in his pant leg might be a sign of a hidden medical condition. As the 2024 election approaches, the pictures, which were taken during Trump’s visit to the White House Rose Garden, have gone viral, leading to armchair diagnoses and a renewed interest in his health.
A user on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted close-up images of what looked to be an odd shape pressing against Trump’s pant leg, sparking the controversy. The post, which asked, “What’s going on here?” received more than 17,000 likes in a short period of time. Theories soon started to pour in.
Some conjectured that the 45th president might have been wearing a Foley catheter, a device that is frequently prescribed for people with urinary incontinence and drains urine from the bladder into a collection bag strapped to the leg. One user even went so far as to link this purported device to symptoms of late-stage frontotemporal dementia, mentioning personality changes, impulsivity, and problems controlling one’s bladder.
But others had a different opinion. According to some, the obvious outline could be a brace, possibly supporting “drop foot,” a condition that can arise from nerve damage and make it difficult to lift the front portion of the foot. One user commented, “This all adds up if he’s had a neurological event.”
There was more online chitchat. Trump also appeared at a UFC event in New Jersey over the weekend, where more photos of what seemed to be a similar protrusion prompted similar remarks. Others went so far as to make fun of the purported tubing, comparing the sound it produced to a “sloshing Capri Sun” as he moved.
However, in the midst of all the online conjecture, one crucial detail is being missed: Trump received a clean bill of health from his most recent medical evaluation.
Earlier this year, Trump’s personal doctor, Captain Sean Barbabella, confirmed that the president passed a thorough physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Blood tests, a cardiac screening, and a neurological evaluation (the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, on which Trump reportedly received a perfect score of 30 out of 30) were all part of the five-hour examination. Dr. Barbabella said at the time that Trump was in peak physical and mental condition.
Trump has kept a busy public schedule in recent weeks. He was photographed examining construction on the White House lawn after spending the weekend at Camp David. He was standing tall on a wooden plank that had been placed over the grass and chatting with workers.
Even though detractors and internet pundits are still analyzing every crease in Trump’s suit and every photograph’s angle, his official medical records and his animated campaign trail appearances paint a much less dramatic picture.
