Dem Senator Killed In Motor Vehicle Accident Over Thanksgiving

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 in Centennial on Wednesday evening claimed the life of Faith Winter, a Democratic state senator and senior legislative leader. The five-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near E. Dry Creek Road, shutting down a section of the highway for several hours. Winter was the only fatality. Three others were injured, though authorities have not released details on their conditions as the investigation continues. The roadway reopened shortly before midnight, according to the sheriff’s office.

Colorado Senate President James Coleman and Senate Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez issued a joint statement expressing deep sorrow, describing Winter as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to Colorado and its residents never wavered. Images from local media showed significant damage to multiple vehicles, underscoring the severity of the crash.

Winter, 45, began her legislative career in the Colorado House of Representatives after first being elected in 2014. In 2018, she won a seat in the state Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Beth Martinez Humenik. Following redistricting, she represented the 25th Senate District beginning in 2023.

At the time of her death, Winter served as assistant Senate majority leader, the chamber’s third-highest-ranking position, and was term-limited in 2026. She is survived by her two children, Tobin and Sienna, and her fiancé, former state Representative Matt Gray.

Widely regarded as an advocate for transportation policy, environmental issues, and working families, Winter chaired the Senate Transportation & Energy Committee and served on several others. She held a degree in environmental management and biology from the University of Redlands.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis publicly mourned Winter’s death, praising her as a fierce advocate and longtime colleague. Secretary of State Jena Griswold echoed those sentiments, noting that Winter leaves behind a lasting legacy of public service. A party vacancy committee will determine who completes the remaining year of her term.
