“You came back,” Noah sobbed. “I knew you would come back.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Lauren held him instinctively, one hand cradling the back of his head, the other wrapping around his small trembling body.
She had spent the entire evening lowering her eyes, carrying trays, refilling glasses, pretending the rich and powerful could not wound her with their whispers.
To them, she was nobody.
A servant.
A temporary hire.
A woman in gray moving quietly through a room full of silk, diamonds, and polished cruelty.
But in Noah’s arms, she was not invisible.
She was home.
