Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Ethan moved closer, each step slower than the last.
“Clara,” he whispered again. “Is it you?”
The housekeeper’s lips trembled.
“My name is Lauren.”
“No,” he said, shaking his head. “No, I know that face.”
His voice cracked.
“I buried that face.”
Noah looked between them, frightened by the heaviness in his father’s voice.
Lauren hugged him tighter, but her own hands were trembling.
Vanessa stepped forward, smiling too quickly.
“This is ridiculous. Ethan, you’re upsetting everyone. She’s staff. She probably looks like someone you knew.”
But Ethan’s eyes had found the small scar near Lauren’s left temple.
A tiny mark half-hidden beneath a strand of hair.
He remembered kissing that scar once, years ago, after Clara had laughed about falling from a horse as a girl.
His breath caught.
