Chapter 6: Vanessa’s Smile Cracks
Lauren stepped back, but Noah would not let go.
“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t do this here.”
Ethan froze.
Those words were not denial.
They were fear.
Vanessa heard it too.
Her perfect expression cracked for the first time.
“Enough,” she said sharply. “Security, remove her.”
Two guards near the doorway shifted.
Noah screamed.
“No! Don’t take Mommy!”
Ethan turned on them with a look so cold both men stopped immediately.
“Nobody touches her.”
The words filled the hall with a new kind of power.
Lauren looked up then, and for one breath, Ethan saw the woman he had loved beneath the exhaustion, beneath the uniform, beneath the false name.
She looked older. Thinner. Wounded in places no one could see.
But she was alive.
