“Tell me,” Ethan said softly.
Lauren shook her head. “Not here.”
“Tell me,” he repeated, but now his voice broke. “Because I stood over your coffin.”
A collective gasp moved through the guests.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Ethan, you’re embarrassing yourself.”
He did not look at her.
“There was a fire,” he said, staring at Lauren. “They told me you were trapped inside the lake house. They found a body.”
Lauren’s face twisted with pain.
“I wasn’t in the house when it burned.”
The words landed like stones.
Ethan’s face changed.
“Then where were you?”
Lauren looked down at Noah, then back at Ethan.
“Running.”
Vanessa went still.
