Epilogue: The Truth Before Sunrise
I did not scream.
Something in Lucía’s grip told me that screaming would make the wrong person move first.
So I reached slowly for my phone beneath the pillow and pressed the emergency shortcut I had set months earlier and forgotten about.
Esteban turned toward me.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
For the first time, I heard the edge beneath his gentleness.
Lucía sat up then, shaking but brave.
“No more,” she whispered.
Those two words broke the spell in the room.
By sunrise, my brother was crying in the kitchen, my mother was praying with one hand over her mouth, and Lucía was finally telling the truth she had carried in silence.
