Chapter 1: His New Plan
My husband came home after fourteen weeks away, walked into my hardware store with another woman, and announced that they intended to sell it.
“Marlene, this is Tessa Grant,” Owen said, placing a leather portfolio on the counter my father had built. “We’re opening a design studio in Nashville.”
Tessa looked polished but uncomfortable. “Owen said you were expecting us.”
I wasn’t. I had expected my husband to return alone, apologize for missing my heart surgery, and help me rebuild the strength I had lost.
Owen had left for a historic-restoration fellowship three days after my cardiologist scheduled the operation. He called it his last chance to do meaningful work. I let him go because I loved him, although my sister Ruth had to move into our upstairs apartment to care for me.
Now Owen pushed papers toward me. “Selling this place gives everyone a clean start.”
“Everyone?” I asked.
His gaze drifted toward Tessa. That silence told me what he lacked the courage to say.
