My Son Brought Home His Fiancée—Then I Recognized Cindy

Chapter 1: The Woman at My Door

The instant my son brought his fiancée into our home, I knew our family dinner was over.

Daniel had been dating her for three months, yet my husband, Tom, and I had never met her. For weeks, we did not even know her name. He said they had met at a coffee shop near his college and that she was painfully shy around families.

When the door opened, Daniel entered beaming. The woman beside him looked up, and the room tilted beneath my feet.

I recognized her face.

“Mom, Dad, this is Cindy Vale.”

Her name confirmed what my memory was already screaming.

I forced myself to smile. “Cindy, come help me choose a wine from the basement.”

I let her walk ahead of me. The moment she crossed the threshold, I shut the door and returned to the kitchen.

“Call the police,” I told Tom and Daniel. “I have a lot to tell you.”
