Chapter 3: Robert’s First Confession

My hands shook as I opened the envelope. All ten of my children—because that was what they were—gathered behind me.

The letter’s first sentence stopped my breath.

“I was found alive three weeks after I vanished, and by the time you began fighting to keep the children together, I was well enough to know it.”

Robert explained that grief, exhaustion, and untreated illness had driven him into a severe mental breakdown. He had boarded a bus with no destination, collapsed two states away, and spent weeks in a hospital under a misspelled name.

But he did not use that illness to excuse the next thirty years.

Once treatment restored his judgment, he learned that I had remained with the children. He started home twice, he wrote, but shame overwhelmed him. He convinced himself that returning would disrupt the fragile safety I had created. Later, when the adoption proceedings began, he signed papers surrendering his rights instead of appearing in court.

“My illness explains why I left that morning,” he wrote. “Cowardice explains why I stayed gone.”
