Chapter 1 – The Promise He Broke
Dylan’s hands tightened around mine beside the pool, and every warning bell inside me began ringing.
“You trust me, right?” he asked, smiling toward the photographer.
Months earlier, he had shown me a video of a groom throwing his bride into a swimming pool. The guests in the clip roared while the woman surfaced in a heavy, dripping gown.
I had looked Dylan directly in the eye. “If you ever do that to me, I will leave.”
He had laughed, then promised he would never humiliate me that way.
Our wedding day had been beautiful until that moment. The ceremony was tender, the portraits were nearly finished, and sunlight shimmered across the hotel pool. I thought Dylan wanted one final photograph.
Instead, he released my hands and shoved.
I hit the water hard. My dress dragged around my legs, my makeup burned my eyes, and shocked voices rose from the patio. When I surfaced, Dylan was laughing. Two of his friends slapped his back and exchanged high-fives.
“That’s going viral!” he shouted.
Something inside me went still. It wasn’t merely the ruined dress or the public embarrassment. Dylan had remembered my boundary, brought me to the pool anyway, and turned my trust into entertainment.
Then my father stepped through the silent crowd.
