During a 2023 tour date in Toronto, John Mayer performed “Edge of Desire” without a backing band, using a double-neck acoustic guitar to carry the song by himself. Mayer was 45 at the time, and footage of the stadium performance went viral, drawing more than 210,000 views. Among the responses from rock and pop fans was a comparison naming him the Eric Clapton of his generation.

Mayer originally released “Edge of Desire” on his 2009 album, “Battle Studies.” In Toronto, the live version opened with an unmetered, ambient passage likened to meditation music. It then moved into an elaborate picked introduction whose rhythm suggested elements of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” Mayer subsequently brought in his voice, which the source characterized as deep, velvety and pitch-perfect, with a tone approaching that of a studio recording.

The arrangement required Mayer to manage its guitar and vocal parts simultaneously. Some fans responding to the video ranked “Edge of Desire” among the most difficult songs to play and sing at once. By that stage of the performance, the stadium audience had fallen entirely quiet. Other viewers called the rendition superhuman and described Mayer as an artist at the height of his abilities.

Much of the praise centered on the accuracy of his playing. One viewer emphasized the cleanliness of the performance, pointing to the balance and exact position of every note. Fans also singled out Mayer’s choice to tackle the song on a 12-string guitar. In their assessment, that instrument strengthened the number’s mysterious mood, while one listener said it gave the performance a wonderful feeling.
