Chapter 1 – The Weekend I Wanted to Believe In
When my ex-husband, Leo, asked to spend a weekend reconnecting with our daughter, Lily, my first instinct was to refuse. He had missed birthdays, school performances, medical appointments, and too many promised visits to count. Still, hearing him say he wanted to repair what he had broken stirred a hope I thought I had buried.
I packed Lily’s yellow dress, favorite snacks, star-covered pajamas, and the teddy bear she carried everywhere. While I helped with her jacket, I remembered Leo weeping when he first held her as a newborn. That memory had survived even after our marriage had not. Against my better judgment, I wondered if the loving father I had glimpsed that day was finally ready to return.
Leo promised a quiet weekend focused entirely on Lily. On Saturday, he sent a photograph of her smiling at a park. Her happiness looked real, and I let myself breathe. Maybe she would no longer have to wait beside the window for someone who never arrived. Maybe he finally understood that fatherhood was built through ordinary, dependable moments.
Sunday afternoon, my sister called. Her voice was controlled, but I could hear anger underneath it. She sent me a social media link and told me to open it immediately. The first photograph showed Leo in formal clothes, raising a glass beside a woman in a bridal gown. He had gotten married without telling me. In the next picture, Lily stood beside them in white chiffon and a flower crown.
