Dinner began with uncomfortable small talk. Mike praised the potatoes. Sarah barely touched hers. Edward remained cheerful until I mentioned Mike’s upcoming business trip to Washington.

“That’s funny,” Edward said. “Sarah leaves for Miami that same week. She told me it was a college friends’ trip.”

The silence that followed was an answer. I placed printed copies of the reservations beside the serving dish. Mike stared down. Sarah started crying, and Edward’s smile disappeared.

“Did you invent the accident to take my inheritance?” I asked.

Mike admitted that he had. He and Sarah had grown close while complaining about their marriages. What began as private messages became a fantasy about escaping their ordinary lives. Mike knew I would never fund the trip, so he created an emergency he believed I could not refuse.

Sarah said she had convinced herself they would return with clarity and quietly end everything. Edward answered that deception was not a path to clarity. His voice was wounded, but controlled.

I told Mike to cancel every reservation and leave our home that night. Then I stayed with my friend Jenny. From her spare room, I contacted the bank and an attorney. Because I had authorized the transfer, recovering it would require Mike’s cooperation or a civil claim.

At sunrise, he sent one message: “The trip is canceled. I’ll return everything I can today. I finally understand what I’ve done.”
