Eric studied the list and said he did not think our marriage needed professional help. I told him therapy was not punishment. It was the condition for rebuilding what his lie had damaged.

When he called me “Gracie,” I stopped him. That name had once made me feel cherished, but lately he used it whenever he wanted quick forgiveness. I told him tenderness without loyalty was only a shortcut around accountability.

He chose a therapist.

At first, Eric went weekly. During a difficult stretch, he attended twice a week. He learned that Judith’s pressure worked because he had spent his life treating her disappointment like an emergency. Saying no made him anxious, but he began doing it anyway.

Judith cried when he declined a Sunday gathering. She accused me of separating him from his family. Eric did not blame me or surrender. He told her the boundary was his and that loving his parents did not permit him to deceive his wife.

I also attended several sessions. I had to admit that silence followed by sudden withdrawal was not the clearest way to express pain. My departure from the restaurant had protected my dignity, but our future required earlier, firmer conversations.

Six months later, Eric planned a short trip for us. He told no relatives, shared no itinerary, and made no secret arrangements. I packed the green dress again, this time without wondering who might be waiting at dinner.

We sat across from each other in a quiet inn, and he asked carefully, “May I call you Gracie?”

I smiled. For once, it truly was just us.
